Xcom how long is the tutorial

If I restart, and skip it, am I really just allowing myself more freedom in base location, layout, and the first mission, or am I also just totally set free after that with no direction, instead of still having a bit of a guiding hand? Put another, what might I be 'missing' by skipping the tutorial? It took me 3 or 4 missions to get out of the "controlled tutorial" mode. I started an ironman game and it's the first mission, but I don't know if you have to do this mission if you do the tutorial.

It does appear to be, I just saw that start after the tutorial with that mission. So Gatecrasher is post tutorial I guess? In the preview vids I watched the first thing they where allowed to show was that mission then the game started like normal, only skipping the opening and tutorial mission. Ok I think the tutorial story ends after the first 2 missions. Once you have the Avenger power you're in the main story.

No, it continues the story and chops a good chunk off the play time.

You should do it within your first 3 hours of gameplay, not the first 30 minutes like the game asks you to. Also correct, go for armor first like any xcom game, then scopes, then guns, then finally stun guns when you want to continue the story.
