Detroit now has the two best hitters in the division. While anything can happen during the season, it's pretty safe to say that if the Tigers weren't already the odds on favorite to win the Central, they damn well are now.

So what does the biggest contract in the 18 year history of the division mean for everyone else? Prince Fielder is a better hitter than Victor Martinez. Their offense for is likely improved. As many have been pointing out though, what happens in ? Martinez will still have two years left on his contract and won't be able to play very many innings behind the plate as a 34 year old recovering from knee surgery. The team will have three expensive hitters that will all be on the wrong side of 30 vying for two spots.

Reportedly, Cabrera will be attempting to play third base again. He hasn't done so regularly since and wasn't good at it back then. The Tigers aren't quite in the same rarefied payroll air as the New Yorks and Bostons of the world, but until Mike Ilitch dies they will remain on that second tier and ahead of the White Sox.

Until we know the yearly breakdown of the salary in this contract. Will the last few years be worth it? I was way off on this one, I never thought he would get nine years or million. The Tigers are all in on trying to make it to the world series this year. All the top free agents went from the NL to the AL. I think it makes alot of sense for these big hitters to go to the AL because of the DH. This move locks the Central for years to come for the Tigers. Ummm…it actually only locks Prince for the Tigers for years to come.

But I tell you, if he did do this, someone give Boras a fat raise and hire him to fight the insurance companies. Rumours coming out of Boston is that the Fielder deal will be followed up with a mega trade between the Tigers and the Red Sox.

Heck they may as well get Cepedes, regardless of what he is asking. I do not want Cespedes at all now. No more long term deals, otherwise we will have no shot of extending JV and Miggy again. Alcoholic Chicken… Mmmm…. They both kind of equally suck. This lineup is gonna be sick when V-Mart comes back. I agree that the lineup will be great when V-Mart returns, but where do they all play? I can also see don kelly getting a lot of playing time at 3rd the days cabby is the DH.

I dont see inge being on the team much longer. Nine years? I think I am the only tigers fan that does not like this signing. Like I have said, the terms are absolutely chaotic.

BUT, you put yourself in a real nice position to be serious world series contenders with this move. Vmart could hit the line drive gaps in comerica and was great in the clutch. I dont think this move makes the tigers that much better. This explains why I have seen a ton more little ceasers commercials recently.

Trying to get more business to pay that contract. It is an improvement, but is it worth the money and years for the improvement when we could have gotten aramis ramirez or even reyes?

Get at the very least one to two world series championships out of this move and I will be proven wrong. So how may runs per game will Detroit have to avg. That was exactly my point. They seem to have had no trouble scoring runs without it.

The tigers will not trade a guy who hit. Boras has sunk to a new low! Truth is the offence is going to be a lot better the next few years with Prince. The best hitters in baseball. Pizza Pizza! Oh and the fact that its a ton to go to a NHL game and they have a salary cap so illitch is like okay well tigers! Well the Wings operate under a salary cap so he knows how much he is going to spend year to year. He owns little ceasars.

Joe Louis arena is a dump love it though. So the 50 consecutive sellouts at the Joe probably afford Illitch some spending money on his other team.

Also it helps when people are excited about baseball since Season tickets are going to sell fast. Hard to argue this. As a fan, I really see no reason to be concerned about salaries. I see no reason to celebrate that. I absolutely love that comment. The length scares me, the money doesnt. Salaries matter with regards to the well-being of you favorite team. If a good player is signed for way way too much money, sure he looks good there out on the field, but his salary might cripple the team.

As a fan, you want to see your team win as much as possible specifically championships. Ignoring how much people are getting paid is fine, but it helps you gauge what kind of position your team is in to make signings, trades, etc.

The movie and restaurant analogies are way off base. Fans should have a vested interest in every move their team makes. Any evaluation of the money side of it is simply a blind evaluation because you only get to know as much as they want you to know. I laugh at the fact that anyone thinks that these player salaries cripple any team. Only bad if Jimenez sucks it up and Pomeranz and White turn out to be studs.

Indians were never really a contending team anyway. They were extremely misguided to think that a hot start meant they were legit.

So when he is 30? A lot of MLB players are just as good at 30 as any other time. Fielder will be good. They only sign over the hill past thier prime players like Kevin Millwood and Oliver Perez and never want to spend the money necessary to win.

I have been a Seattle Mariners fan all my life and I am totally disgusted with the fact they let Fielder slip through their fingers. If they think Montero is going to provide them with the offense they need they are sadly mistaken. Adding a player like Fielder to the Tigers line up makes both better. Cabrerra will probably benefit the most with Fielder hitting behind him. At least for a while. Fun fact: Right Field in Comerica Park extends feet. I read an article on Forbes that said that the Tigers will probably be renegotiating their deal with FOX next year too.

Fielder is Dunn? You know better. Tigers are no doubt about it title contenders now. They have a very good lineup, solid bullpen, and one great pitcher along with three good pitchers with flashes of greatness. Trading Jacob Turner made more sense than this. You can really tell a lot about a player with 22 random PA in any given season. Fielder is a name Detroiters know and should hit absolutely epically behind Cabrera.

How many comparables were hitting behind someone like Cabrera? I wonder if players want to stay away from D. Like what? It seems like, at least to me, they have a strong, young lineup with Zimmerman, Morse, Espinosa. Their pitching looks strong, Strasburg and Gonazles are really, really good young pitchers. You want to talk about a mystery team? I never saw this one coming. However, his father did play there. If he does well over the 9 years, he could get another year contract…and Miguel Cabrera is only turning 29 next season.

Protection for each other. The more I think about this, the more I like it. Cabby at 3b is a spooky prospect, true. But the whole 3-dh thing is overblown. The Tigers should try Cabrera at 3rd and if he can handle it they should try to make Castellanos a shortstop which is what he played in high school so when peralta leaves we have an immediate plan and just hope that he is the real deal. Overall this is a great sign and i cant wait to watch that deadly cabrera fielder combo.

Should be a fun year. If they are going to stick with Cabrera at 3b after , they need to replace Peralta with one of the better defensive SS in the game with good range. So what does their lineup look like now? V-Mart should miss all of This signing doesnt help the tigers pitching or fielding much. With Miggy and Fielder in the line up, its going to be hard to decide which one to throw to. Personally, I would put Prince hitting 3rd and Miggy hitting 4th and then slide Victor in the 5 spot when he comes back either next year or at the end of this year.

Every poor person in America is going to pay for this new contract. I never thought Boras could make this kind of deal for Fielder, as much as he is hated he is the top agent. This move was out of nowhere. The only thing holding back the Tigers now is its Manager.

If Leyland can summon the energy to pay attention during the whole game and stop making his weird baseball decisions, this roster may just be Leyland proof. Anyone else see the press conference? Comments So done deal?

See 2 posts below this one, top bullet point. I really want to see if he breaks MM. I think he does. DH Miggy moving to Third? Victor goes to DH. Prince to 1B, Cabrera to 3B. Just as dumb as it sounds. V-Mart was DH. Only caught occasionally to spell Avila. Eww 24 million a year.

What an albatross.
