The body of the Volvo XC70 features immense torsional rigidity and the car has a sturdy chassis, a combination that results in consistent, predictable behaviour on the road see also under "Powertrain and Chassis". Volvo Cars has developed various information systems designed to help the driver while on the move.

Protective safety in the Volvo XC70 is structured around a network consisting of exterior and interior safety systems that interact with one another to reduce the risk of occupant injury in a collision. The exterior systems have the task of distributing and absorbing incoming collision forces so that the passenger compartment remains as intact and undamaged as possible.

The body is therefore built in the form of a metal cage where all the components interact with one another to ensure controlled deformation. The interior safety systems aim to keep the passengers securely in place and also to reduce the risk of serious injury. All are fitted as standard in the Volvo XC What is more, all five seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel seat belts, belt pre-tensioners and head restraints.

Powertrain and chassis The engines in the Volvo XC70 are five-cylinder, transversely installed in-line units. A five-cylinder engine gives low vibration and smooth operation. Together with large displacement, the five-cylinder configuration provides high torque across a broad rev band, and thus also swift acceleration and excellent driveability within a wide speed range. The chassis, with spring struts at the front and Multilink axle at the rear, is set up for stable, reassuring driving manners and alert steering response.

The Multilink rear axle is an independent rear suspension system featuring a number of links and it is designed to offer a good combination of controlled wheel movements and high ride comfort. Some of these links have the task of providing a certain degree of anti-skid steering effect. A long wheelbase and wide track, together with a very torsionally rigid body, contribute to the predictable, controlled driving manners.

There is extra-high ground clearance for added get-you-there capability. DSTC cuts in and helps stabilise the car if it registers any tendency to skid. An active chassis with advanced Four-C technology is available as an option. With this system, the chassis settings are adjusted automatically to suit the current driving conditions, thus improving both handling and ride comfort.

So can anyone give me some great arguments on how the 2 compare? Or how the 3 compare, if you have an opinion of the Saab? We drive in the rain, a lot, and in the snow for ski trips about 5 times a year. We would use the car for a daily short-trip commuter, and for family trips that include 2 teenagers.

The main differences I see in the 2 cars are: AWD, more powerful engine, electronic climate control, better seating material in the XC. Less important to me are raised suspension, roof rails, body cladding, although I do like the more burly look of the XC.

Are there features I'm missing? As owners, how important are these various features to you? Thanks for you help!

The Saab is a great, although aging design, vehicle. My main complaint with the Saab is torque steer, because of the front wheel drive setup, and cowl shake, because of the lack of front chassis stiffness. Those aside, I'm sold on Volvo's safety over the Saab, the main contributor to this being all wheel drive, instead of the Saab's front wheel drive.

If you are not into the XC70's cladding, ride height, baseball stitch seats, you might want to consider resale value when comparing the XC70 with the V70 AWD. I've had all three, so here's my two euros worth:- Agree with Coffeeman - I had a Saab aeons ago, loved it except for the torque steer and horrid gearbox. Cutting to the chase between V70 and XC70 - The base XC70 being the top of the range model is a much better spec than the standard V Is the V70AWD a turbo model haven't looked , if not then that's a whole lot of difference If it is then the difference is smaller..

For me the clincher - and here you almost have to build a decision table - but the clincher is that the XC70 gives yo a better ride than the V70 with its skinnier tyres, softer over potholes and more comfortable BUT without any loss of stability or steering qualities.

Go for it man - There's no helpful V70 forum; doesn't that say something. Happy sliding in the snow I justy miss the PCC Go for the XC Great replies, but you already answered your own question.

Since you said "We drive in the rain, a lot, and in the snow for ski trips about 5 times a year. And the raised suspension and body cladding is perfect for snow driving. Although most people who knows how to drive in the snow would have no problem with a FWD vehicle, the extra AWD and raised suspension would give you a great advantage as well as piece of mind. Nothing wrong with the V70 though, it's still a Volvo.

I had a 92 Saab Turbo convert. It was probably the best car I ever owned; eleven years, k miles, a roll over in which the car held up so well Saab sent engineers to examine and photograph the car, great in snow, and definitely out of the ordinary. I miss it nearly every sunny day or twisty road.
